This week’s MATILDA updates is written by senior Jazlynn Cates. Jazlynn is an ITS Member and is portraying the role of Mrs. Phelps in this season’s production of ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL.

This past weekend seniors River Epperson and Jazlynn Cates attended the 2020 International Thespian Society State Competition. Even though the regional show that troupe #5623 competed with a few months back did not advance to state, the two decided they still wanted to attend the conference.

Friday night the two participated in a stage combat workshop where they learned how to fight properly on stage with swords. Saturday was full of workshops, teaching things like improv and yoga to help focus and learn lines. The two competed Saturday afternoon with a scene from the show entitled “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani. The pair received an “excellent” rating and brought home ribbons to add to the collection of theatre memories.

They ended the weekend Sunday by watching the award and scholarship ceremonies, and watching Franklin Centrals production of “Bring It On!” the musical. The two agreed that is was a fun weekend of laughs and making new friends, and they were very happy they chose to go.
