Junior Ashley Carr writes this week's THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL update. This year, Ashley is a Junior Rep. for ITS Troupe #5623 and is the Stage Manager for this season's production of THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL.
This week in Bikini Bottom, the crew members join the cast for our first week of tech rehearsals of The SpongeBob Musical! Not only did the cast and crew come together this week, the Gibson Southern Art Department and costume designers started to finish costumes and set pieces for this week allowing for everyone to show off their costumes and create a real life Bikini Bottom!
On Tuesday, the crew joined the cast on our first day of technical rehearsals. Additionally, Conductor Rob Hutchinson and Foley Artist Bo Higgs joined us to add live music and sound effects. The cast began by working on the basketball teaser for the JV basketball game. All crew members were assigned to their different roles and positions to prepare to work on a list of selected scenes for the grades 3-5 teaser for the community schools. As we moved through each scene, the crew began to add in lighting design plus all the different set pieces and props. For Act I, we focused on big musical numbers including Bikini Bottom Day andWhen the Going Gets Tough.
Wednesday and Thursday, the cast and crew continued to work together on more scenes for the teaser. We adjusted more lighting and assigned stage crew members to different set pieces for the beginning of the show. The cast worked through more scenes with large dance numbers. The costume ladies finished final touches on costumes for the cast like Gary the Snail and Squidward Q. Tentacles! Our art teacher, Ms. Laura Russell, and students from the art department also helped in finishing the scenery around the auditorium.
Friday afternoon, 3-5th graders from Haubstadt, Fort Branch, and Owensville Community Schools came to Gibson Southern to get a sneak peak at this year’s musical. In between each scene, the cast and crew talked about different topics such as the audition process, costume and set design, live music, and the behind the scenes of the crew. All the kids had a blast singing along, asking questions, and meeting their favorite SpongeBob characters. The cast ended the night with a second teaser during the Varsity basketball game, wrapping up an awesome week with all our hard work paid off.
