Mary Hall – MATILDA Senior Spotlight

Mary Hall

What is your name? Mary Hall

What is your cast role or crew position in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical? I am a dancer in the cast of Matilda and also am a part of the prep crew.

What is your favorite Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical quote, song or scene — and why? One of my favorite scenes in Matilda is Loud. The scene leading up to the dance is so funny and well performed. The dance is also very high energy and one of my favorite dances I’ve ever performed in my time in GSTD. This scene is so different to me from the rest of the play and really adds another layer of richness to the entire production.

How many Gibson Southern Theatre productions (including Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical) have you been a part of while in high school? I have been a part of 10 total GSTD productions- 4 Vaudevilles, 4 musicals, 1 Young Playwrights, and 1 ITS Regional play.

What is your favorite role, act, or show that you have been a part of in high school? I would say that my favorite show to be a part of was as a dancer in Newsies, although Matilda is a close second. The soundtrack was so high energy and all the dances were so much fun to perform. We, as a cast and crew, really bonded during this production and truly brought the show to life.

Do you have a favorite story from your time spent in theatre? One of my favorite memories from my theatre journey was during the musical Cinderella during my sophomore year. Sydney Dixon, Aubrie Reid, Abby Goings, Kyra Smith, and I were on the quick changing crew that year. Somehow we came up with the name “Blood Brothers” and that musical we always had so much fun with our quick changes and created so many fun memories together.

What are your plans after high school? After high school I plan to attend college (still not sure where yet) and major in biochemistry for Pre-Med. After, I hope to attend medical school and become some type of doctor.

What words of advice do you have for those thinking about joining Gibson Southern Theatre? I would definitely recommend joining. When I came in my freshmen year, I had no idea what to expect, but was blown away by the passion and commitment I found in this departement. I have always felt welcomed and included and have come to learn that anyone can find a place where they belong in this department. Theatre quickly became one of my favorite activities that I was a part of and I am so glad I have been able to be a part of it for four years.
