Jazlynn Cates – MATILDA Senior Spotlight

Jazlynn Cates

What is your name? Jazlynn Cates

What is your cast role or crew position in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical? Mrs. Phelps

What is your favorite Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical quote, song or scene — and why? My favorite song from Matilda is “When I Grow Up”, because it reminds me a lot of my childhood. There is nothing more pure than swinging on the swings and watching the clouds, and the song just hits me a little different.

How many Gibson Southern Theatre productions (including Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical) have you been a part of while in high school? I have been apart of 13 shows at Gibson Southern.

What is your favorite role, act, or show that you have been a part of in high school? My sophomore year during Vaudeville: Muppets Take Over, I got to play Bruno Mars in the lip sync battle and it was one of the best things I have ever been apart of. I also had an incredibly fun time in this years Vaudeville and Matilda.

Do you have a favorite story from your time spent in theatre? I have thousands of memories but “Its a Good Vaudeville Charlie Brown” brought the most memories. From getting hit in the head with the main curtain and Oliver laughing at me, to accidentally ripping my pants after Hooters, I had so much fun. Even if I did have to wear the Lord Farquad wig.

What are your plans after high school? I plan on attending Indiana University to major in psychology, and just see where life takes me from there!

What words of advice do you have for those thinking about joining Gibson Southern Theatre? At least try it once! It’s a big commitment but you never know if you like it until you try it. I have heard so many people say they regret not joining sooner, don’t let that be you! There are so many opportunities for new friends and it’s an opportunity to find yourself.

Do you have anything else to add? Thank you to all the amazing casts and crews that have helped me grow over the past 4 years. I also would like to thank Bledsoe, Lisa, KP, the costume ladies, the set dads, and all of the adults who made the past 4 years of my life something I will never forget. Theatre will hold a piece of my heart forever and I will cherish the time I was able to spend in ITS troupe #5623. I would also like to thank my mom and dad for their unconditional love and support through theatre. I love you all!
